Unsolicited Emails (Password Recovery or Account Activation)
The article provides advice should receive either a Password Recovery or Account Activation email without having requested one. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions in this regard.
Password Recovery Email
If a LabXchange user has forgotten their password they have the option of resetting that password using the email address that they used for registration. If you have received a password reset email without submitting a request, someone else has entered your email address as part of this process.
Note that the link in the email you received is the only method of changing your LabXchange password without logging in first. As such, there is no risk of someone changing your password or updating your profile unless they also have access to your inbox.
If your email address was submitted accidentally your password will remain unchanged and no further action is required. It would be advisable to watch out for any similar requests or emails from other services as it could indicate that your address has been targeted for phishing or similar.
If you find that your LabXchange password has been changed, it indicates that your contact email address has likely been compromised. It is highly recommended that you update your email password to secure your inbox, after which you can change your LabXchange password via the login screen or this link to regain control of your profile. We would also suggest updating your password for any other services which make use of the same contact address, as well as scanning your devices for viruses or malware.
Account Activation Email
As part of the LabXchange account creation process, new users are sent an email which includes an activation link. This serves to confirm that the user has provided the correct email address, and has access to the inbox for that address.
If you have received an activation email and did not attempt to register an account with LabXchange, someone else has entered your email address when signing up. This was likely done accidentally, but note that it is possible to log into and use a LabXchange account without completing the email activation so it would be advisable to take control of and/or delete the account.
We would recommend using this link to update the password for the account, allowing you to log in. You then have the option of taking control of the account or deleting it via the account settings. Note that if the account has not been yet activated you will see a banner displayed across the top of the page requesting that you complete the activation. If you did not use the activation link but the banner is not displayed, your inbox has likely been compromised and your email password should be changed as soon as possible.
